Who This Is For
If you're a forest manager, a conservation officer, or a landowner with a few dozen acres of woods, this one's for you. You've probably searched for "how to protect wildlife in my forest" and gotten a dozen vague tips like "plant native trees" or "leave dead wood." But you know it's not that simple. We've been in the field for years, and we've learned that protecting wildlife while keeping a forest productive is a balancing act. This is a practical walkthrough of how we actually decide what to do, based on the latest global data—not just theory.
Step 1: Map Your Critical Habitats
You can't protect what you don't know. Start by mapping the forest's critical habitats: nesting sites, water sources, and migration corridors. Satellite data helps, but ground-truthing is essential. In the tropics, for example, forests cover only about 7% of the Earth's dry land but likely harbor about half of all species (NASA Earth Observatory). That concentration means a single tree can be a lifeline. We once found a tiny pond that was the only water source for a herd of deer within miles—mapping it changed our logging plans entirely. Use GIS to layer your forest's topography with wildlife observations, and update it yearly.
Step 2: Prioritize Primary Forest Patches
Not all forests are equal for wildlife. Primary forests—those never cleared or heavily logged—are the gold standard. Globally, they cover at least 1.18 billion hectares, about a third of reported forest area (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). If you have any primary forest left, that's your top priority. We've seen too many managers treat all stands the same, but old-growth trees provide cavities, canopy structure, and food sources that younger forests can't. When we had to choose between logging a 50-year-old plantation and a 200-year-old stand, we took the plantation, even though the timber volume was similar. The wildlife response was immediate: within a year, we had more bird species nesting in the old stand. If you don't have primary forest, focus on the oldest, most complex stands you've got.
Step 3: Manage for Disturbance—But Watch the Fire Risk
Wildlife evolved with disturbances like fire and pests, but climate change is cranking up the intensity. In 2020, insects, diseases, and severe weather damaged about 41 million hectares of forests (FAO Newsroom). And fires are a growing threat: in 2024, forest fires emitted 4.1 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases globally—more than four times the emissions from all air travel in 2023 (WRI). So, we have to manage proactively. That means creating firebreaks, thinning overly dense stands, and removing invasive pests. But be careful: fire is also a natural process. We've learned to mimic low-severity fires with controlled burns, which opens the canopy and triggers regeneration. Just don't let a fire get out of hand—we once lost 200 acres to a controlled burn that jumped a line because we didn't factor in the wind shift.
Step 4: Control Invasive Species—They're a Wildlife Killer
Invasive species can devastate wildlife by destroying their food and shelter. The emerald ash borer, for example, has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees since arriving in Michigan in 2002 (USDA NISIC). Once a tree is infested, it loses most of its canopy within two years and dies within three to four (USDA NISIC). That's a rapid loss of habitat. We've had to make tough calls: cutting down infested ash to slow the spread, even if it means losing some timber value. But it's worth it. We also work with local agencies to introduce biological controls—like parasitic wasps—where appropriate. And we train our crew to spot the early signs, like D-shaped exit holes, so we can act before it spreads.
Step 5: Work with Indigenous and Local Communities
This isn't just a nice-to-have; it's a proven strategy. In the Amazon, scientists found far less deforestation in territories managed by Indigenous peoples than in parks and other protected areas (NASA Earth Observatory). And globally, about 1.6 billion people, including nearly 70 million Indigenous Peoples, rely on forest resources for their livelihoods (WRI Global Forest Review). So, when we plan a project, we start by talking to the local community. We ask about their hunting grounds, sacred sites, and traditional knowledge. In one project, Indigenous elders showed us a medicinal plant that we'd never noticed—it turned out to be critical for a local bird's nesting. We adjusted our buffer zone to protect it. It takes more time, but the payoff is huge: better stewardship, fewer conflicts, and often, better outcomes for wildlife.
Step 6: Consider Certification—It's Not Just a Badge
Certification schemes like FSC and PEFC can be powerful tools for wildlife protection, but they're not all the same. FSC certifies more than 160 million hectares, with about 175.5 million certified hectares across 89 countries (FSC UK Facts and Figures). PEFC covers almost 300 million hectares, about 71% of the world's certified forest area (PEFC Facts and Figures). Both have standards for biodiversity, but FSC has stricter requirements on intact forest landscapes and Indigenous rights. We've been FSC-certified on one block and PEFC on another. The FSC audit was tougher—they required us to set aside 10% of the area as a conservation zone. But it also gave us credibility with buyers and opened doors to premium markets. If you're serious about wildlife, don't just pick the cheapest certification; pick the one that aligns with your conservation goals.
Step 7: Plan for the Long Term—Think 30, 50, 100 Years
Wildlife protection isn't a one-off project. It's a long-term commitment. That means you need a management plan that looks decades ahead. More than half of the world's forests—2.13 billion hectares, or 55%—are under long-term management plans (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). If you're not in that group, you should be. We write plans that specify which stands will be harvested, which will be left for old-growth, and how we'll maintain wildlife corridors. We also set aside areas for biodiversity conservation, which globally account for 482 million hectares (FAO Newsroom). And we monitor: we count bird species, track deer populations, and measure the health of the understory. It's not glamorous, but it's how you catch problems early. If you don't have a plan, start one this year. Your forest—and its wildlife—will thank you in 2050.
What I'd Actually Do
If you take only one thing from this, make it this: focus on primary and old-growth forests. They're irreplaceable. And while you're at it, get certified—FSC if you can, because its standards are tougher on wildlife protection. But don't stop there. Work with your local community and Indigenous neighbors; they're your best allies. And above all, plan for the long term. The data is clear: we're still losing tropical primary forest at an alarming rate—3.7 million hectares in 2023, and 6.7 million hectares in 2024 (WRI). But you can be part of the solution. Start with these steps, and you'll make a real difference for the wildlife in your forest.
