Everyone loves planting trees. It feels good, looks good on Instagram, and gives us a sense of agency against climate doom. But here's the hard truth: planting trees is not the same as conserving forests. In fact, the single most effective conservation method you can support is protecting primary forests — the ancient, undisturbed woodlands that store massive amounts of carbon and harbor half the world's species. And we're failing at it.
The Question: Should Conservation Focus on Planting Trees or Protecting Primary Forests?
This isn't a theoretical debate. It's a practical question that shapes how billions of dollars are spent. If you're a policymaker, a donor, or a concerned citizen, you have to decide where to put your money and your effort. Should we push for massive tree-planting campaigns, or should we fight to protect the forests that already exist?
I say protection wins, hands down. Here's why.
Planting Trees Is Not Conservation
Let's be blunt: planting trees is a numbers game. It's easy to count saplings and claim victory. But the reality is that planted forests are not the same as natural ones. They account for only about 8 percent of global forest area (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). That's a tiny fraction. And while China, Russia, India, Türkiye, and Australia have been praised for reforestation efforts, with China adding about 1.6 million hectares per year, these are often monocultures — single-species plantations that don't provide the same habitat or carbon storage as natural forests.
Meanwhile, the world is losing primary forests at an alarming rate. In 2023, tropical primary forest loss totaled 3.7 million hectares — that's almost 10 football fields per minute (WRI Global Forest Review). And here's the kicker: more than 96% of deforestation occurs in the tropics (WRI). So while we're planting trees in one place, we're destroying irreplaceable forests in another.
Primary Forests Are the Real Carbon and Biodiversity Powerhouses
Primary forests are the heavyweights. They cover at least 1.18 billion hectares, about one-third of reported forest area (FAO). These forests store a disproportionate amount of carbon. Global forest carbon stocks are 714 gigatonnes, and primary forests are a huge part of that. When we lose primary forests, we release carbon that has been locked away for centuries. In 2023, tropical primary forest loss produced 2.4 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions — almost half of the annual fossil fuel emissions of the United States (WRI).
Biodiversity? Tropical forests cover only about 7% of Earth's dry land but probably harbor about half of all species on Earth (NASA). Primary forests, with their complex structure and ancient trees, are irreplaceable for species that need undisturbed habitat. You can't recreate that with a plantation.
Protection Works: The Indigenous Advantage
So what does effective protection look like? The answer might surprise you. Scientists using satellite and ground-based data in the Amazon found that far less deforestation occurred in territories occupied and managed by Indigenous peoples than in parks and other protected areas (NASA). That's a powerful finding. It suggests that the best conservation method isn't just drawing lines on a map — it's supporting the people who have been stewards of these lands for generations.
Around the world, about 20% of forests are in legally protected areas, up 251 million hectares since 1990 (FAO). But protection is not enough if it's not enforced or managed well. In contrast, Indigenous territories often have the dual benefit of legal recognition and local commitment. They are a conservation method that works.
The Case for Protection Over Restoration
Some argue that we need both protection and restoration. Sure, restoration has its place. The Bonn Challenge aims to restore 350 million hectares by 2030, and over 210 million hectares have been pledged (IUCN). But here's the problem: restoration is slow, expensive, and often fails to recreate the complexity of primary forests. It's a good complement, not a substitute.
Let's look at the numbers. Net forest loss fell from 10.7 million hectares per year in the 1990s to 4.12 million hectares per year in 2015–2025 (FAO). That's progress, but gross deforestation is still 10.9 million hectares per year (FAO). We're still losing more than we're gaining. And the rate of forest expansion is actually decreasing — from 9.88 million hectares per year in 2000–2015 to 6.78 million in 2015–2025 (FAO). So planting trees is not keeping up with deforestation.
In the tropics, the story is even more urgent. Brazil lost 36% less primary forest in 2023 than in 2022, which is great, but it's still losing a lot (WRI). Colombia reduced its loss by 49%, but Bolivia's loss rose 27% (WRI). And Laos lost 1.9% of its remaining primary forest in a single year — a rate five times faster than Brazil's (WRI). These are the front lines of conservation, and they demand protection, not just planting.
What You Should Actually Support
So, what's the single best move? It's simple: support the protection of primary forests, especially in the tropics, and back Indigenous land rights.
- Advocate for and fund Indigenous-led conservation initiatives.
- Push governments and companies to halt deforestation, not just offset it with tree planting.
- Support policies that protect primary forests, like the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which sets targets for 2030 (CBD).
Tree planting has its place, but it's not the answer to forest conservation. The real conservation method is to stop destroying what we already have. That's where the biggest gains are, and it's where we're failing.
Bottom Line
Stop planting trees as a substitute for protecting primary forests. The single best move is to support the protection of existing primary forests, especially by backing Indigenous land rights and enforcing existing protected areas. That's the conservation method that actually works.
