Standing in the Woods, Facing a Choice
Let me set the scene. You're hiking in the tropics. The trail splits. To your left, an ancient forest—trees that have stood for centuries, a jumble of life above and below. To your right, a neat plantation of young trees, all the same height, like soldiers in formation. If you had to pick one to protect, which would you choose?
I've been wrestling with this for a long time. We're constantly told to plant trees, buy certified wood, support reforestation. But here's a fact that often gets lost: planting trees and saving forests are not the same thing. In fact, they can be at odds. Globally, we're losing primary forests—those irreplaceable, complex ecosystems—at a pace that should scare us. So what's a concerned person to do?
In this piece, I'm going to compare two broad strategies: protecting and restoring primary forests, on one hand, and relying on planted forests and certification schemes, on the other. I'll look at ecological value, carbon storage, and what's actually feasible on the ground. Then I'll tell you where I'd put my time and money—and it might surprise you.
The Two Paths: Protection vs. Management
Option A is strict protection. That means halting deforestation in primary forests and restoring degraded ones. These are forests that have never been cleared or have recovered naturally. They cover about one-third of all forest area—at least 1.18 billion hectares, according to the FAO's 2025 assessment. They're biodiversity hotspots, home to an estimated half of all species on Earth. When we lose them, we lose something we can't get back.
Option B is the managed approach. This means promoting planted forests and certification schemes like FSC and PEFC. Planted forests cover about 312 million hectares, and that number is growing. Certification aims to make logging sustainable, with FSC certifying over 175 million hectares and PEFC nearly 300 million. The idea is that if we manage forests well, we can have our timber and our trees too.
Biodiversity: The Old Forest is Untouchable
When it comes to biodiversity, there's no contest. Primary forests are the gold standard. They harbor about 80% of terrestrial plants and animals. Planted forests, by contrast, are often monocultures or low-diversity plantations. They can't replicate the complex web of life that develops over centuries of natural processes.
Consider the Amazon: scientists found that deforestation is far less in territories managed by Indigenous peoples than in parks and other protected areas. That shows protecting primary forests—often with local communities—actually works. Meanwhile, planted forests, while valuable for timber, are no substitute for primary habitat. Since 1990, we've lost 324 million hectares of naturally regenerating forests. That's a tragedy we can't undo.
Carbon: The Old Growth Wins, But Plantations Have a Place
Forests store a massive 714 gigatonnes of carbon globally. But primary forests are particularly dense in carbon, especially in their soils and large trees. When they're cleared, that carbon goes into the atmosphere.
Planted forests also sequester carbon, but they often store less per hectare and are more vulnerable to disturbances like fire and pests. In 2024, fire-driven losses were catastrophic: global tree cover loss hit 30 million hectares—an area the size of Italy. Planted forests, especially in fire-prone regions, are more susceptible to such losses.
However, planted forests can relieve pressure on primary forests by providing timber and other products. The key is to ensure they're certified and sustainably managed. But certification itself is not a silver bullet—it's a tool, not a solution.
Feasibility: The Hard Reality
Here's where it gets tricky. Protecting primary forests is politically and economically difficult. The drivers of deforestation—agriculture, cattle, soy, palm oil—are powerful. The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is trying to change that by requiring companies to prove their products are deforestation-free, covering cattle, wood, cocoa, soy, palm oil, coffee, and rubber. This is a step forward, but implementation is complex and compliance dates are still rolling out.
Restoring degraded land is also a massive challenge. The Bonn Challenge aims to restore 350 million hectares by 2030, and while pledges exceed 210 million hectares, actual restoration is slow. Meanwhile, planted forests are easier to establish and can provide quick wins for timber and carbon. Certification schemes like FSC and PEFC are well-established, with millions of hectares certified, but they operate mainly in temperate and boreal regions, not the tropics where deforestation is worst.
So, Which Wins?
If you're a conservationist with limited resources, you should prioritize primary forest protection. It's the only way to safeguard biodiversity and the most carbon-dense ecosystems. But you can't ignore the need for sustainable production. The truth is, we need both—but they are not equal.
Quick tip: When choosing wood products, look for FSC or PEFC certification, but remember that certified forests are not a substitute for protected primary forests.
What I'd Actually Do
If I had to put my money where my mouth is, I'd invest in protecting primary forests, especially in the tropics, and support Indigenous land rights. The data is clear: Indigenous territories are some of the best-protected forests. I'd also push for stronger enforcement of laws like the EUDR, which could cut at least 32 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
And I'd caution against the false comfort of planting trees while primary forests burn. In 2024, fires caused nearly half of tropical primary forest loss. We can't plant our way out of that. We need to stop the bleeding first.
