Stop Planting Trees in the Woods: A Forest Ecology Reality Check

You can't restore a forest by planting trees. Here's how to actually help forests recover, using the science of forest ecology.

This is for the well-meaning volunteer who has planted a thousand saplings and still wonders why the forest isn't coming back. It's for the landowner who wants to "reforest" a pasture and the NGO staffer planning a tree-planting campaign. You're doing something good, but you're probably doing it wrong. Not because you're careless, but because the conventional wisdom about forest restoration is dangerously oversimplified. Let's cut through it.

The Surprising Truth: Planting Trees Can Hurt Forests

Here's the contrarian claim: planting trees in a degraded landscape can actually slow down natural recovery. You read that right. When you plant a monoculture of fast-growing exotics, you might be creating a plantation, not a forest. The FAO defines a forest partly by its structure—it's not just trees, but the complex web of species and processes that make a forest function (FAO Forest Resources Assessment 2025). A plantation of eucalyptus or pine is not a forest in that ecological sense. It's a tree farm. And it can suppress the native species that would otherwise recolonize the area. So before you pick up a shovel, ask yourself: does this land actually need me to plant trees, or does it need me to stop interfering and let it heal?

Step 1: Know What You're Starting With

First, figure out what you're dealing with. Is the land deforested—meaning the forest cover is gone and the land is used for something else, like pasture or cropland? Or is it degraded—meaning it's been damaged but still has some forest cover left? This distinction matters. Deforested land might need active restoration, but degraded land often recovers on its own if you just remove the stressors. The FAO reports that naturally regenerating forests cover 92% of the world's forest area (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). That's a huge number, but it's also declining—324 million hectares of naturally regenerating forest disappeared between 1990 and 2025 (FAO Newsroom: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). So natural regeneration is powerful, but it's being overwhelmed. Your job is to tip the balance back in its favor.

Step 2: Let the Forest Do the Planting

Your first move should be to do nothing. Seriously. Stop planting and start listening. If there's any remnant forest nearby, it will send seeds into the degraded area. Birds, wind, and mammals will do the planting for you—for free. This is called natural regeneration, and it's the cheapest, most ecologically sound method there is. The FAO's Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025 shows that forest expansion is happening—but it's slowing down, from 9.88 million hectares per year in 2000–2015 to 6.78 million in 2015–2025 (FAO Newsroom: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). That slowdown is a red flag. We need to encourage natural regeneration, not replace it with tree planting.

Step 3: If You Must Plant, Plant for Diversity, Not for Carbon

Sometimes natural regeneration isn't enough. If the land is completely barren, if there's no seed source, or if you're racing against invasive species, you might need to plant. But plant like a forest, not like a farm. That means a mix of native species that would naturally occur there—not a monoculture. Why? Because a diverse forest is more resilient. It's better able to withstand pests, diseases, and climate change. The FAO notes that in 2020, insects, diseases, and severe weather damaged about 41 million hectares of forests (FAO Newsroom: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). A monoculture is a sitting duck. So plant a variety of trees, and include shrubs and groundcover. You're not planting trees; you're kickstarting an ecosystem.

Step 4: Protect What's Already There

Here's the blunt truth: the best way to conserve forest is to keep it from being cut down in the first place. Protecting an existing primary forest—one that has never been logged—is infinitely more valuable than planting a new one. Primary forests cover at least 1.18 billion hectares, about one-third of the world's forest area (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). These are irreplaceable. They hold massive carbon stocks—the FAO estimates global forest carbon stocks at 714 gigatonnes (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). When you lose a primary forest, you lose carbon that took centuries to accumulate, and you release it as CO2. In 2023, tropical primary forest loss alone produced 2.4 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions—almost half of the annual fossil fuel emissions of the United States (WRI Global Forest Review: 2023 tree cover loss). So your second move is to protect. Support protected areas, buy forest-friendly products, and advocate for policies that stop deforestation.

Step 5: Don't Forget the Mangroves

If you're near a coast, your restoration project might involve mangroves. And mangroves are a special case. They're incredibly efficient at storing carbon, and they protect coastlines. But they've been hammered—global mangrove extent declined by 5,245 square kilometers (3.4%) between 1996 and 2020 (Global Mangrove Watch data update). The good news is that about 8,183 square kilometers of mangroves are considered restorable, including about 2,000 square kilometers in Indonesia (Global Mangrove Watch data update). If you can restore a mangrove, do it. The carbon benefit is huge: restoring global mangrove losses since 1996 could safeguard carbon equivalent to 1.27 gigatonnes of CO2 (Global Mangrove Watch data update). That's not a drop in the bucket—that's a bucket.

Step 6: Join a Restoration Initiative—But Be Skeptical

There are big global initiatives like the Bonn Challenge, which aims to restore 350 million hectares of degraded and deforested land by 2030. So far, more than 210 million hectares have been pledged by over 60 countries and other partners (IUCN Bonn Challenge press release). That sounds great, but pledges aren't the same as results. Many of those pledges might be for tree plantations, not true forest restoration. So if you join an initiative, ask hard questions: What species are they planting? Are they using native trees? Are they measuring ecological recovery, or just counting seedlings? The Bonn Challenge has regional platforms like AFR100 in Africa and Initiative 20x20 in Latin America (IUCN Bonn Challenge press release). Get involved, but hold them accountable.

What Can Go Wrong

Here's a warning: you can do everything right and still fail. For example, in 2023, Canada had its worst fire season on record, with a five-fold increase in tree cover loss due to fire between 2022 and 2023 (WRI Global Forest Review: 2023 tree cover loss). That means even protected forests can go up in smoke. Fire affects an average of 261 million hectares of land annually, nearly half of which is forested (FAO Newsroom: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). So if you're planting trees in a fire-prone area, you need a fire management plan. Otherwise, you're just growing fuel.

Bottom Line

The single best move you can make for forest ecology is to stop planting trees and start protecting what's already there. Support natural regeneration. If you must plant, plant diverse native species. And above all, remember: a forest is more than a collection of trees. It's a living system. Treat it as such.
