Why Old-Growth Forests Beat Tree Planting for Carbon Storage

We keep planting trees, but primary forests are the real carbon champions. Here's why conservation beats restoration—and why we need both.

Imagine you're standing in a forest that has never been logged. The trees are massive, the canopy is dense, and the ground is spongy with centuries of decomposing leaves. This is a primary forest—the kind that stores carbon in ways that planted monocultures can't touch. But we're losing these forests faster than we can replace them. The numbers are stark: tropical primary forest loss in 2023 alone released 2.4 gigatonnes of CO2, nearly half of annual US fossil fuel emissions (WRI Global Forest Review: 2023 tree cover loss). That's a carbon bomb we're setting off every year.

Primary Forests Are the Carbon Champions

Primary forests cover at least 1.18 billion hectares—about one-third of all forest area (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). They're not just old; they're irreplaceable. They hold the largest carbon stocks per hectare, and they host about half of all land-based species, even though tropical forests cover only 7% of the Earth's dry land (NASA Earth Observatory: Tropical Deforestation). When we lose a primary forest, we lose more than trees—we lose a complex ecosystem that took millennia to build.

Planting Trees Is Not the Same as Restoring Forests

We're obsessed with planting trees. China adds about 1.6 million hectares of new forest per year (FAO Forest Resources Assessment 2025). That sounds great. But planted forests are only about 8% of total forest area—312 million hectares globally (FAO Newsroom: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). They're often monocultures, with low biodiversity and limited carbon storage compared to natural forests. Meanwhile, naturally regenerating forests—the kind that grow back on their own—declined by 324 million hectares between 1990 and 2025 (FAO Newsroom: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). We're losing the wild forests faster than we're planting tame ones.

The Restoration Bandwagon Has Limits

Restoration is all the rage. The Bonn Challenge aims to restore 350 million hectares by 2030, and countries have pledged over 210 million hectares since 2011 (IUCN Bonn Challenge press release). But restoration is not a substitute for protection. Restoring a degraded forest takes decades, and even then, it may never recover the complexity of a primary forest. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework set 23 targets for 2030, including 30% of lands protected (CBD Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework). That's good, but we need to focus on keeping existing primary forests intact, not just planting new ones.

Indigenous Stewardship Works—And We're Ignoring It

The strongest evidence for protecting primary forests comes from Indigenous territories. In the Amazon, scientists found far less deforestation in Indigenous-managed lands than in parks or other protected areas (NASA Earth Observatory: Tropical Deforestation). Yet about 70 million Indigenous people rely on forests for their livelihoods (WRI Global Forest Review: 2023 tree cover loss). Supporting Indigenous land rights is a proven conservation strategy—and it's cheaper than paying for restoration later.

But Wait: Can't We Just Plant More Trees to Offset Emissions?

Some argue that massive tree planting can offset our carbon emissions. Let's do the math. Global forest carbon stocks are 714 gigatonnes (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). If we restored all degraded mangroves—about 8,183 square kilometers—we'd safeguard 1.27 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalent (Global Mangrove Watch data update). That's significant, but it's a fraction of what we emit annually. And planting trees on grasslands or savannas can actually harm those ecosystems. The truth is, no amount of planting can replace what we lose when a primary forest burns.

Prioritize Protection, Then Restoration

So here's my recommendation: we must put primary forests first. That means expanding protected areas, strengthening Indigenous land rights, and targeting restoration only where it makes ecological sense—like mangroves, which are critical for coastal protection and carbon storage. The Global Mangrove Watch shows we've already lost 3.4% of mangroves since 1996 (Global Mangrove Watch data update). We can't afford to lose more.

Yes, restoration has its place. But it's no excuse for continued deforestation. The 145 countries that pledged to halt forest loss by 2030 need to walk the talk (WRI Global Forest Review: 2023 tree cover loss). When you're in a burning house, you don't start building a new one—you put out the fire. Our primary forests are the house. Let's save them first.
