The Forest Is Not a Museum: Why Active Management Beats Hands-Off Conservation

Hands-off conservation sounds noble, but it's failing. Active forest management—logging, thinning, restoration—is the pragmatic path to saving forests. Here's why.

You've heard it a thousand times: if we just leave forests alone, they'll heal themselves. That's a comforting myth, but it's wrong. The data says otherwise. In 2024, tropical primary forest loss hit 6.7 million hectares—nearly twice the 2023 total, an area the size of Panama, lost at about 18 soccer fields per minute (WRI: Global Forest Loss Shatters Records in 2024). If we're serious about forest conservation, we need to stop treating forests like museum pieces and start managing them like the living, dynamic systems they are. That means logging, thinning, and restoring—not just locking them up.

Isn't leaving forests alone the best way to protect them?

No. The hands-off approach has a poor track record. Take Canada: in 2023, the worst fire season on record caused a five-fold increase in tree cover loss due to fire between 2022 and 2023 (WRI Global Forest Review: 2023 tree cover loss). Globally, fires emitted 4.1 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases in 2024—more than four times the emissions from all air travel in 2023 (WRI: Global Forest Loss Shatters Records in 2024). These fires aren't just natural; they're fueled by decades of fire suppression that left forests overstocked and vulnerable. Meanwhile, 2020 saw insects, diseases, and severe weather damage about 41 million hectares of forests (FAO Newsroom: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). An unmanaged forest is a tinderbox and a buffet for pests.

Doesn't logging destroy forests?

It can, if done badly. But sustainable logging—especially when certified—is a tool for conservation, not a threat. More than half of the world's forests (55%) are under long-term management plans (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). That's a good thing. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifies over 160 million hectares of forest, and PEFC covers nearly 300 million hectares (FSC UK Facts and Figures; PEFC Facts and Figures). These certifications require strict environmental and social standards. When you buy FSC- or PEFC-certified wood, you're supporting active management that keeps forests healthy and productive—and you're reducing pressure on illegal logging.

What's the difference between a primary forest and a planted forest?

Primary forests are the old-growth, untouched ones—they cover at least 1.18 billion hectares, about one-third of reported forest area (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). Planted forests, on the other hand, are only about 8% of total forest area, some 312 million hectares (FAO Newsroom: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). But here's the kicker: naturally regenerating forests—those that grow back after disturbance—declined by 324 million hectares between 1990 and 2025 (FAO Newsroom: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025). We're losing natural forests, but planted forests are increasing. That's not a trade-off; it's a strategy. Planted forests can meet timber demand and take pressure off primary forests.

Is the Amazon really being saved?

Partly, but don't pop the champagne. Brazil cut primary forest loss by 36% in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching its lowest level since 2015 (WRI Global Forest Review: 2023 tree cover loss). That's real progress. But in 2024, Brazil accounted for 42% of all tropical primary forest loss, with fire-driven loss up more than sixfold from 2023 (WRI: Global Forest Loss Shatters Records in 2024). And Bolivia's loss rose 200% in 2024, ranking second globally (WRI: Global Forest Loss Shatters Records in 2024). So, yes, the Amazon is under pressure, but active policies—like the EU's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)—can push companies to clean up their supply chains. The EUDR requires proof that products like cattle, soy, and palm oil are deforestation-free (EU Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR)). That's a powerful lever.

Does certification actually matter?

Yes, and here's a concrete example: if you're a furniture maker in Europe buying tropical hardwood, you can either buy uncertified wood—risking that it came from illegal clearing—or you can buy FSC-certified wood, which guarantees it was harvested sustainably. FSC has more than 60,000 companies with chain-of-custody certification (FSC UK Facts and Figures). PEFC accounts for about 71% of the world's certified forest area (PEFC Facts and Figures). Certification isn't perfect, but it's the best tool we have to ensure that the wood in your deck isn't contributing to deforestation.

What about restoring degraded land?

That's the flip side of the coin. We can't just stop cutting; we have to actively restore. The Bonn Challenge aims to restore 350 million hectares of degraded land by 2030, and over 60 countries have pledged more than 210 million hectares so far (IUCN Bonn Challenge press release). The Great Green Wall across Africa is another example: it stretches 8,000 km and aims to restore 100 million hectares of degraded land (UNCCD Great Green Wall Initiative). Mangroves are a prime candidate: restoring global mangrove losses since 1996 could safeguard carbon equal to 1.27 gigatonnes of CO2 (Global Mangrove Watch data update). Restoration is not passive; it requires planting, managing water, and monitoring. It's active conservation.

Isn't planting trees the answer to climate change?

No, tree planting alone won't save us. Forests already hold 662 billion tonnes of carbon (FAO Feature Story: If trees could talk). But deforestation and land-use change still cause about 11% of global CO2 emissions each year (FAO Feature Story: If trees could talk). Planting trees helps, but we also need to protect existing forests—especially primary ones, which are irreplaceable. And we need to use wood products to substitute for concrete and steel, which are carbon-intensive. For example, replacing steel and concrete with timber in half of new buildings across Africa could cut 5–10 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions by 2050 (World Bank Forests and Landscapes). That's a huge win, and it requires active management of forests to produce that timber.

The best move for forest conservation is not to lock forests away, but to manage them actively—through sustainable logging, certified supply chains, and ambitious restoration. That's the only approach that has a chance of meeting the 2030 goals that 145 countries have pledged to achieve (WRI Global Forest Review: 2023 tree cover loss). So next time someone says "leave the forest alone," tell them that's not conservation—it's neglect.
